「XXXは午後4時の休憩の間に3本の指で測れるほどのウイスキーを3杯ひっかけ、ますます明晰になり、ZZZも含めていちばんの論客だった。」

ウイスキー3杯の後に「明晰」(はっきりしている、頭脳明瞭)というのはちょっと変だと思うのですが、どうでしょう。 Clearheadedに訳してよいのか迷ってしまうのですが・・・。

「弁が立つほど頭脳明晰になり」ということでしょうから
弁が立つようになった、というのが本当でしょう。

酒好きのなかには、明晰になるかどうかはともかく、お酒を飲むとますます弁がたつ人はいますね。ここでは冗談も交えて「明晰」という言葉を使ったんじゃないかと思いますが、clearの代わりにsoberを使うと、「お酒を飲んで酔っているはずなのに明晰になった」という対比が表現できないでしょうか。

親指3cmほどのウィスキーですからそれほど多いわけでもないですし、ますます血気盛んに議論を展開した、などという風にも読める気はいたします。
