Japanese term or phrase: しんいちたい
Engraved on the side of a katana made recently
English translation:New Generation/New Age
Are you sure the second-to-last character is た, not だ? If it's しんいちだい, then I believe the kanji would be: 新一代. That translates to "new generation," or "new life." 新 means "new," and 一代 means "lifetime/generation/age/the period of an emperor's reign."
