Japanese to English translations [Non-PRO] Bus/Financial - Real Estate | | Japanese term or phrase: 洋6 | | While translating a manga I came across a floor plan of a tiny apartment, with the central room labeled " 洋6". I can tell this must describe something about the size or layout of the room, but what exactly does it mean? |
| | | western style, 9.72m² | Explanation: 「洋」 means 「洋室」, a western-style room, as opposed to 「和室」, a Japanese style room (with tatami, fusuma, etc.). 洋室 therefore refers to Western decor, e.g. a room carpeted with skirting boards and wallpapered with Western patterns.
6 means 6畳, a standard size in Japan along with 4½. 1畳 is 900 x 1800mm, so 6畳 is 1.62 x 6 = 9.72m².

I would maybe add "approx." after 9.72m² or round it up to 10m² approx. since, apparently, the exact measurement of 1畳 can vary from region to region (or I guess from developer to developer – maybe that's how they make more money!).
