I would probably rephrase this as something like:
"a fighting match using Karate-style standing techniques" or "a Karate-style fighting match using standing techniques."
....I'm confused myself! :-)

Sorry, I assumed the asker is a native Japanese: The match implied by the asker is the one where contenders can employ
thrusting (突く), kicking(蹴る),　punching (打つ) techniques—on a standing position only, but not throwing (投げる) and strangling (絞める) ones on the ground. It includes, but not limited to Karate, however. The famous K1 belongs to this category.

KathyT: Highly doubtful abbreviation. Plenty of girls do karate too, btw!! // Interesting. My kids' (female) karate sensei would be pretty disappointed to hear it referred to as a "boy's (sic) sport."

-> I, too, am not sure about the origin of 系 in this particular context, but I am uncomfortable with the word type. Although it is very well possible that Japanese girls participate in karate, for all practical purposes it is a boy's sport in Japan.

tappi_k: '-kei', although annoying, is quite commonly and casually used to mean 'type of', or even '-ish' and I think this is one of them. and I would have to jump in there and say it's not particularly a boy's sport and that it doesn't even originally Japanese!

-> I never claimed that karate was originally a Japanese sport, but I do maintain that it is a boy's sport in Japan. Might I also add that your only contribution has been negative and ill-placed at that. The word "type" does not fit well here at all.
