The term is an old slang for people from Jeolla province. This is in reference to the strong regionalism that has been in existence in Korea since the Korean War due to a massive migration of people to Gyeongsang-do and then back to northern regions of South Korea, especially Seoul, while people in Jeolla province pretty much stayed in the same area in a relative peace. However, massive aggregate of population allowed for much better networking among the rest of Korea while Jeolla province was relatively isolated from the new network that had formed, which went on to produce political elites of Korea and defined the mainstream Korean culture. So, this slang term is basically putting Jeolla people in contempt by saying that they are like Hawaiians in that they are like people living in an island.

The regionalism could go back even further in history in regards to intellectual and philosophical movement as well as even further back to Three Kingdoms era, but I felt the modern historical background was enough for this definition. |
