Lithuanian to English translations [PRO] Law (general)
Lithuanian term or phrase:miesto rajonas, kaimas
Kaip verstusi kazkokio miesto "rajonas" ir kazkokiu pavadinimu "kaimas" ? Ar tai butu District and a Village ar Rural District and Village?
Explanation: Assuming that the authors of the document knew what they were writing and were not making a mistake, then „miesto rajonas“ would be City Region, i.e. a Region (rajonas) surrounding a City (miestas) of the same name, which is the case with several Lithuanian cities and surrounding regions, including Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. „Kaimas“ can, of course, also refer to a rural area, but when attached to a proper name it is more likely to mean Village.
Pakruojo rajonas, Gudoniu kaimas labai paprastai = Pakruojis Region, Gudoniai Village. Tačiau EN kalboje žmonės linkę pirma minėti kaimą, tada rajoną (Gudoniai Village in the Pakruojis Region)
Kažkada lyg ir diskutavom - didžiausia problema, kaip vadinti apskritį ir rajoną. Tai, berods, nusprendėm, kad tiksliausiai būtų 'district' ir 'region'.

The term city region has been in use since about 1950 by urbanists, economists and urban planners to mean not just the administrative area of a recognisable city or conurbation but also its hinterland that will often be far bigger.
