Malay to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents / marriage certificate
Malay term or phrase: (query about an annotation on a marriage certificate)
This is, strictly speaking, not a translation question, I suppose. But I need to know the answer to complete a translation -- and only someone who has had something to do with such documents would know the answer.

The question is what does a deliberately made small black circular blot (or large black dot!) between the two parts of a Chinese name mean.

E.g. Tan Seng (dot/blot) Lai Seng.

(Not the real name -- for reasons of confidentiality)

No guessing please -- it's too important for that.

I wonder if it is not a way of indicating "daughter of" --because on another part of a document the two parts of an Indian name are separated by A?L (anak lelaki); and a Malay name has, of course, "bin" in the same position.

If anyone can help me I would be very grateful.

Explanation:
The person's name is Tan Seng @ Lai Seng. Chinese do not use "A/L" or "A/P" to denote son of or daughter of respectively.

ref - I translate lots of birth/marriage/decree nisi certs.
