THE real stars behind Cindai, the play written by national laureate Datuk Noordin Hassan, is its creative team...
Director Rohani Yousoff playwright Datuk Noordin, music director Pak, Ngah and dance director Sharifah Mahani Syed Kassim all deserve credit for a show well done.
Applause should also go to set designer Badrul Zaman. Abdul. Jalil for his simple yet effective stage, and props manager Nazali Wahab who worked simple ideas.,
Rohani, who has played Tengku Puteri in-the first staging in 1986, outdid herself with. this production
And if her 1995 production received encouraging response from the public. It is not surprising that Cindai played to almost full houses every night, this time around.
Of course, it helped, that the Istana Budaya supplied several cultural dancers, too.
Although certain scenes dragged on a little, the team more than made up for, for it with music and dance that was as melodious as it was enchanting, quite apt for the story-line. Special recognition, must also go to costume designer Rosman Ishak for his overall design work for the main cast and extras, too.
Rosman showed good sense for the needs of those on stage when he designed the clothes that reflected the Malay era of the past, and enabled the actors and dancers to move freely when they needed to.
Cindai tells the simple story of Good versus Evil. Everything good in man is portrayed by the character Cindai, a pure-hearted palace dancer while Pak Ku is evil incarnate.
The beauty of the play is that the issues are timeless and encourages the. audience to reflect on, life.
Cindai is a play within - a play, ail executed tastefully.
It was, staged at the Istana Budaya from Aug 24 to Sept 2, starring - Sharifah Shahira (Cindai), Jalil Hamid (Pak Ku), Ida Nerina (Tengku Puteri), M.Rajoli (Sultan 2), Azizah Mahzan, Abon, Dr Samat Salleh, Ibrahim Akir, Zaidi Karim, Mohd Hady Tahir, Ami Haryani Abdul Hamid and Rosliza Mohd Razali.
The Johor-born Jalil put up a convincing Pak Ku full of deceit when he was the palace nobleman and then apologetic when he was the caretaker of Cindai's grave.
Shahira as Cindai was faultless. Her lines although brief, were delivered effortlessly and her dancing was graceful.
Award-winning actress Ida Nerina could have stolen the show with her Tengku Puteri but the fair and professional person never attempted to, quite content to just carry the role casually and. regally.
Another actor to be applauded was Azizah who played three characters in the two-hour play:
As the Datin, Azizah looked as casual as 'She was the defence attorney.
She also carried, off the young and aging Mak Rabiatul to the hilt.
Kelantanese Sabri too, was faultless with all his three characters the paralysed dancer, palace. nobleman and Datuk Sambaria.
Together with the rest of the star studded cast, Sabri helped pull off a great show worthy: of a repeat performance.
