Re the “тийм” part of expressions like “хэрэв тийм бол”, is perhaps the basic idea of “тийм” “thus, like that”? If so, this is a very common theme running through languages of various kinds. For instance, the Polish word tak (yes) in Russian (так) means “thus”.

Dictionaries are good and great, but there are often phrases and variations that no dictionary can cover. Actually "tiim" retains the meaning of "so" even when its function is "yes". E.g. Tiim uu? ([Is] it so?) Tiim! ([It is] so!) But of course in this case you would normally translate "yes", since that is the function of tiim in this sentence. I'm just saying that the sense of "so" is still there. |
