I couldn't find a picture to see what these look like, but are we talking about barbecue griddles?

Asker: I first thought that that was what was meant, Per, but then I found this definition: "helle1 subst.m/f 1 (flat steinskive) flagstone, flag, slab of stone ● det var lagt heller foran inngangen the entrance was paved with flagstones 2 (takke) round iron griddle". This made me wonder if "helle" here referred to the actual griddle rather than the flagstones.
