agree  Charles Ek: "Representative" is best here. The alternative is "military union representative" but that is wordy in the context. The context is not "trade union representative" in this instance.

agree  amsimon33: in reality, tillitsmann implies a "chosen representative" or "elected representative" - not one who is self-appointed. One may want to add the adjective - and it doesn't make it more wordy.
