Norwegian to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Government / Politics
Norwegian term or phrase: A-samf.viter
In a list of board members and deputy members for a pension fund. Each is shown with his or her respective political affiliation, e.g., NN (KrF), NN (AP), NN (SP), etc. However, one of these appears as "NN (A-samf.viter)". I understand what his occupation is, but what's the "A-" about? Doesn't seem to be Arbeiderpartiet, as "AP" is used for another member.

This usage appears in two different annual reports from the same fund that I found on Google, but nowhere else?

arbeidstakerorganisasjon - samfunnsvitere

Explanation:
As far as I understand, "A" is not a political party, nor is "stat.viter" a professional title. From the 2007 annual report for AFPK:

"Pensjonskassen er en egen juridisk
enhet og ledes av et styre med syv
medlemmer. Fem medlemmer er opp
nevnt av fylkestinget i Akershus, men
arbeidstakerorganisasjonene oppnev-
ner to styremedlemmer. Styrets funk-
sjonsperiode følger valgperioden, og
nytt styre ble oppnevnt etter valget i
2007."

In the same report, the board members are listed, four with a political party affiliation, one independent and two reps for the trade unions (LO and A-samf.viter).

And in Norwegian, "A" would be "Akademikerforeningen for ". If Hans enters the English term, the points should go to him.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, this was very helpful. Unless someone comes along with something demonstrably better, I think you have it right with this answer!

Asker: Hans has actually provided the path to the right answer with his link, which I followed to http://www.samfunnsviterne.no/Toppmeny/English/ and found: "The Association of Social Scientists is member of The Federation of Norwegian Professional Associations (Akademikerne), an umbrella organization with 15 affiliated professional associations and a total of 135.000 members." In other words, "A-samf.viter" is an abbreviation for the mouthful of "The Federation of Norwegian Professional Associations - The Association of Social Scientists". I'm inclined to close this without grading, as I think Hans has been most helpful but did not provide the answer itself.

agree  Hans Wang: I think you found the answer yourself through my link, so I am fine with closing without grading. LO is a labor union in the classic AFL/CIO sense of the term, A-samf.viter is a graduate employees labor union: http://www.samfunnsviterne.no/Medlemskap/
