This is from a response to a summons. My understanding of what is meant is that the author left the company at the end of each day and did not bring the documents home with him. Am I understanding this correctly? |

The example sentences do not mean that he left for the day without documents. It means that he got fired or resigned and left his job at the company without taking any documents with. This happened suddenly, e.g. over a serious offense or misbehavior or a fight with the management.
Example sentence(s):- He has left the Rugby Football Union with immediate effect, with another taking over as acting chief executive.
