Example sentence(s):
  • ...to access information and energies that can help awaken us and restore us to wholeness.

Notes to answerer
Asker: The context points to the shaman's impending death, rather than a mystical union. I must repeat, "Jeg tror dette er et begrep av den moderne verdenen eller av buddhismen," rather than something that a noaidi (or an 18th-century Christian reporting on noaidis) would have said. That notion seems very out-of-place in this tale.

to enter an altered state (of consciousness/mind/reality)

Explanation:
Jeg føler "å bli ett" i denne sammenhengen handler om å komme i en slags transe. Hvis du søker på "enter an altered state" og "shaman" i Google, får du relativt mange treff. Om det er et "gammelt" idiomatisk uttrykk, har jeg ikke satt meg inn i.

"The ability to enter an altered state is almost universal and shamanism has been present throughout cultures and histories."

According to your comment to Paul, it seems that "å bli ett" in this context means that the shaman was about to be united with the spirit world as in "passing over to the other side" by dying. (However, I looked in my Norwegian thesaurus under "dø", but nothing suggests that "å bli ett" is a synonym to "dø".)

Check that: We have expressions for death that indicate unification: gå til sine fedre, (oppgi ånden), samles til sine fedre. But the expression "å bli ett" is not, as far as I know, used about dying.
