Det var helt utrolig. Flåten (inflatable life raft) begynte straks å drive vekk fra yachten X. Vi kunne se at vinduene i styrhuset brast sammen og flammene stakk ut over alt i løpet av utrolig kort tid. Først fra flåten fikk jeg kontakt via den håndportable radioen som jeg tidligere hadde hatt når (da) *vi kjørte fra toppen*.


The yacht was sailing from Southern Spain to North Africa, Marocco.

Were we travelling 'top-down' i.e. from the 'headland' or does this mean abandoning ship 'from the mast down'?

What it simply means is "as (when) we drove from the top". There is no inherent hidden meaning to the statement - what the writer means, is anybody's guess. There is no basis for assuming "the top" means the headland, and certainly not from the mast down.
