Persian (Farsi) term or phrase: gasht arshad (?)
Hi,

According to a newspaper article I read recently, this is the name of a kind of police force that enforces hejab. Please write it in Persian and if possible let me know what each individual word means so I can understand the term properly. Is there an ezafeh?

All the best, and many thanks,

گشت ارشاد
Explanation:
"Gasht" means "Patrol" and "Ershad" means "admonishment" or "advice". So the term may be translated (word by word) as "Admonishment Patrol" or something like that.
I think the better translation would be "Vice Patrol" or even "Vice Squad".

agree  Edward Plaisance Jr: "ershad" in my dictionary says "showing the right way". To keep the Persian connotation, I would not recommend "vice"...it is a bit too strong, implying drugs, prostitution, gambling, etc. In Saudi they are called the "religious police"

-> Thanks, you are right. But actually, these guys do much more than simply "showing the right way" here in Iran!! "Religious Police" is a nice equivalent. Thanks!
