Krzemień jest bardzo twardy, ale dość łupliwy, a pękając daje fragmenty o ostrych krawędziach. Odpowiednio mocno uderzając rdzeń można było oddzielić od niego krótsze (odłupki) lub dłuższe (wióry) fragmenty, które dalej służyły do wykonywania drobnych narzędzi krzemiennych, takich jak np. drapacze (do obróbki skór), skrobacze, wiertniki, pazury, rylce, grociki i inne.
