Aldehyd maslowy ma lancuch niezrozgaleziony, tak jak kwas maslowy ("n" oznacza lancuch prosty). Aldehyd kwasu izomaslowego to aldehyd izomaslowy (rozgaleziony) - isobutyl aldehyde.
