ANSI/BOMA standards make a distinction between “VERTICAL PENETRATIONS, (which) have a functional purpose such as allowing passage of building services (HVAC ducts, flues, chutes, dumb-waiters, plumbing, electrical, etc.), or building access and egress, (stairs, elevators, etc.)”; and “VOIDS which only accommodate the need for certain spaces to be higher than those on adjacent floors (atriums,auditoriums, etc.)….The bottom level of a major vertical penetration such as a stairwell or elevator shaft is also considered to be a major vertical penetration whereas the bottom level of a multilevel void is included in the ….floor area……”
