The third volume of the series Educational Research examines the concept of educationalization which generally refers to the phenomenon of transferring social responsibility onto the school.
Educationalization is a translation of the German Padagogisierung and was taken by educational historians “as an umbrella term for the modernisation process” (Smeyers & Depaepe, p. 3). One example of the modernization process is described by Smeyers and Depaepe in the first chapter, “Pushing Social Responsibilities: The Educationalization of Social Problems.” In Belgium, at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, the “school for life” was created to respond to the destabilizing social effects of socialism and secularization by instilling social values into children and above all by fostering economic growth. |
