When the master map is open, all its maps open in tabs, and the editing of any of its individual maps would occur actually directly in the original file.
A significant advantage that I would see to this alternative is that a same individual map could be integrated into many master maps (and in this sense, it could be convenient that in this individual map a register exist that indicates to which master maps it is integrated. This maybe in a tab of the Properties panel); and the individual map could also be open and edited independently, outside the maps into which it is tabbed.
The possibility could be added (just as in a master document) of saving the master map as an independent map, in which case, a new map (physical file) would be created, which would embed all the maps in its tabs and would exist besides and independently of the master map (the shell).
