The coastal waters around the Maltese Islands have been divided into 9 distinctwater bodies. The boundaries for the water bodies were determined on the basis ofthe predominant physical and ecological characteristics, as well as on the nature andmagnitude of pressures on the coastal water environment. As much as possiblecoastal water body boundaries were selected to be contiguous with sub-catchments(Map 2.2). The list of coastal water bodies is shown in Table 2.2.
