History / opis miasta | | Polish term or phrase: igielnik | W 1719 r. sulechowski igielnik Zygmunt Steinbart założył w mieście zakład wychowawczy, który z czasem został przekształcony w pruskie pedagogium. W czasie trwania wojny 7-letniej, 23 lipca 1759 r. doszło pod Kijami do największej bitwy w historii tego regionu, między armią pruską (23 tys. żołnierzy) i armią rosyjską (37 tys. żołnierzy).
W 1729 r. urządzono w Sulechowie pierwszą stację pocztową. W XVIII w. rozwijały się liczne manufaktury, głównie sukiennicze. Od 1817 r. Sulechów był siedzibą powiatu sulechowsko- świebodzińskiego. Pierwszą linię kolejową przeprowadzono przez miasto w 1822 r., a w 1898 r. otwarto port rzeczny na Odrze w Cigacicach. W 1945 r. miasto było zniszczone w 60 %. Do 1975 r. Sulechów był siedzibą powiatu, a po jego likwidacji jest siedzibą Gminy Sulechów. W 1998 r. w mieście założono Państwową Wyższą Szkołę Zawodową.
