I use a "Spenco" padded mattress which fits on the top of the bed mattress. It really helps my sore joints. They are expensive to buy, but if you wanted the address to inquire about it, i will gladly give it to you. Also your dads health visitor should be able to get him one through the NHS I simply love mine as it does support all my sore joints.
