Przy kierunku wybierania do pola chodniki przyścianowe drąży się na określoną odległość 15 do 20 m w pokładach nietąpiących, a powyżej 40 m[1] w pokładach tąpiących, po czym drąży się przecinkę, z której rozpoczyna się ścianę. Chodniki przyścianowe drążone są dalej z postępem ściany, wyprzedzając jej czoło o odległość zgodną z dokumentacją techniczną. Zaletą tego sposobu wybierania jest możliwość rozpoczęcia eksploatacji ściany bez konieczności wykonania wszystkich robót przygotowawczych, a więc szybsze rozpoczęcie eksploatacji ściany.
