I agree that the expression "chi-square TEST" is also widely used and sounds very professionally. But it is not the same as the least square method and cannot be used as an equivalent or synonim.
The least-squares method is a method of obtaining the best values (the ones with least errors) of unknown quantities supposed to satisfy a system of linear equations. Chi-square is a test to evaluate whether deviations from an expected outcome are due to chance or due to incorrect expectations.
