to leapfrog someone in the rankings


Explanation:
You may use "overtake" instead of "leapfrog" if the team/person being overtaken was more than one position ahead. But if the team/person doing the overtaking was just behind the team/person being overtaken and is now just in front of them, then "leapfrog" is probably a better word. And definitely "rankings" not "ranking".
