La pertosse è una malattia infettiva e contagiosa che colpisce le vie aeree superiori, caratterizzata da tosse, con spasmo della glottide.
Il responsabile della malattia è il bacillo Bordetella pertussis, di forma ovoidale. Il bacillo ha una scarsa resistenza nell'ambiente esterno, ma cresce e si moltiplica nella mucosa delle vie respiratorie.
Viene trasmesso attraverso le piccole goccioline di muco o saliva emesse dall'individuo malato. Penetrato nell'organismo, si insedia inizialmente nella mucosa della laringe e della faringe.
Le mucose irritate si infiammano e rispondono con secrezione di muco, il catarro.
La disgregazione dei bacilli morti, libera la tossina della pertosse che lede l'albero respiratorio, irritando le terminazioni nervose e scatenando la tosse spasmodica.
