Para voltar um avião (normal) precisa de iniciar um movimento acelerado uniforme (vamos falar aqui apenas deste tipo de voltas, em vez de irmos para as mais complicadas “accelerated turns”...). O piloto aplica manche para pranchar o avião no sentido da volta e pé para a tornar coordenada. A grande maioria das aeronaves tem um efeito de “Catavento” bastante eficiente, e a força gerada sobre o plano estabilizador vertical obriga mesmo a que a volta seja composta por uma rotação em torno do eixo longitudinal (pranchamento ou “bank”) e uma outra em torno to eixo vertical – “yaw”.
