I've found a popular English name as well: "iron weed"http://www.google.pl/search?hl=pl&q=vernonia polyanthes iron...

But anyway, I would still use the scientific name, maybe just adding "ironweed" in parentheses

assa-peixe

Explanation:
Write the name in Portuguese, italicized. That'll do.

Optionally, you can add the scientific name after the Portuguese name, in parentheses. Remember to italicize or underline the scientific name, if used. Also, the genus name (Vernonia) should be capitalized, but not the species name.
