O primeiro abrangia as populações que se instalaram ao longo da maior parte da região costeira tropical; o segundo englobava os grupos que se estabeleceram na área subtropical do Mato Grosso do Sul, na região meridional do Brasil, Paraguai, Uruguai e Nordeste da Argentina, após expulsarem os seus primitivos ocupantes (Couto, 2000)."
