"Speech" é melhor traduzido como "fala" e não "discurso" (fazer um discurso).

I'm pretty sure the author is trying to say "places/locations/sites where discussions/conversations take place" considering the fact that the Bororo aren't making any speeches or discourses and considering that the following paragraph talks about a Bororo and an anthropologist laughing at Portuguese words in Ibirapuera. The entire article, however, is filled with sentences that are 8 lines long, and I am going bonkers

Não creio que "lugares" aqui esteja se referindo a locais habitados pelos Bororo; acho que a palavra está sendo utilizada em sentido mais amplo...

Com a condicao de que no texto anterior "discursos" tiverem sido traduzidos como "discourses" e "lugares" como "places".
Acredito que o termo "sites" e moderno demais para se referir a lugares habitados pelos Bororo.
