Portuguese term or phrase: Agredir
I am having problems trying to work out what they mean by "agredir" in the following sentence - any advice would be much appreciated.

A necessidade de investir na conservação preventiva do património em Portugal para reduzir os custos com o restauro e AGREDIR menos as obras
Neil Barnes
Local time: 23:17
English translation:minimise (the effect on)
Explanation:
I think it's fairly clear that the idea is that by investing early in heritage conservation, you save on restoration costs and ultimately minimise the effect on the monuments, or whatever they are. I wouldn't regard 'obras' here as meaning the work that needs to be done, but rather the heritage itself - the 'works of art'. So maybe you might translate 'agredir menos' as 'minimise the effect on'.

Yes, I think 'damage' is an improvement.

Thanks a lot, I think that is a really good way of putting it, although I may put "damage" instead of "effect". The article is about "Especialistas de restauro debatem formação e investigação em Portugal" so I have now put "The need to invest in preventive conservation of heritage in Portugal to reduce the costs of restoration and minimise damage to works of art” for "A necessidade de investir na conservação preventiva do património em Portugal para reduzir os custos com o restauro e agredir menos as obras".
