dollar hike Explanation: Hi, Mike, it seems to me that the sentence explains itself everything is all right except for the "explosão do dólar". It means the dollar has had a hike, and things are more difficult for anyone dealing in that currency |

the dollar's leap in value Explanation: My suggestion. There are several words that could be used for dramatic increase but as far as I know most are only verbs, like "soar" and "skyrocket". "Leap" is the only one I found that could be a verb and a noun (as used here) and conveys the idea of a substantial increase. |

upswing Explanation: It obviously refers to a moment now past. The once mighty dollar has plummeted and no one knows (or so I've been told) when it will regain its ground. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2007-11-04 12:37:47 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- shoot-up |

surge in the value of the dollar Explanation: I'm sure it's an upward trend, not downward (that might be implosao) because this is definitely what has happened in Brazil recently |
