Portuguese to English translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general)
Portuguese term or phrase:consórcio
Consórcio, no estilo brasileiro, para compra de automóvel, com lance e sorteio e etc (não vale Consortium, ok). Não é bem layaway. Acho que não existe equivalente em inglês (vale uma definição que explique).
Explanation: joint venture as in partner or member of a consortium, etc

To me, consortium is still the best option, whether you like it or not, because a consortium is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal. In this very case, people trying to get to a specific product (a car, a house, a boat)
4 God's sake, look up consortium in the dictionary. Joint venture is just a lazy alternative (I thougth I was very accurate with my asking) 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
This is a very Brazilian concept. A large group of people, perhaps 50 or 100, all wanting the same thing, in this case a car, all pay a monthly payment to a consorcio and once a month (usually) 1 or 2 members of the consorcio are picked by lottery to receive their goods. With some groups, if a member has some extra money in a given month, they may bid and the highest bidder gets their car above and beyond the lottery. This is an alternative to financing for those who may not have a good credit rating or credit score. The important thing here is that the vehicle remains in the name of the concorcio until you have made the final payment. If you stop paying, naturally, they repossess. The concorcio is finished when everyone has their car.
