I have been living in the United States for over 10 years, so I know a bit about the IRS (enough to get by). As far as I understand, all US citizens are issued a Social Security Number (equivalent to the CPF) when they are born. If you are not a US citizen, but need to pay taxes here, you will be issued either a SSN or an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). Employers are issued an Employer Identification Number (EIN). I am not sure what number companies use to pay for their own taxes, if the EIN or another number, but I think it is the EIN. I see that the IRS W9 form has a field for the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). I reckon that must be the US equivalent of CPF.
As for businesses, the IRS page below says:
"An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity."
So it looks like the CNPJ would be a Federal Tax Identification Number...

And you´re right about CGC being the old acronym, I´ll let the guy know that it should be CNPJ.
