Portuguese term or phrase:concurso de Livre-Docente
More phrases contained in a Science Professors CV, this word docente always gives me problems as in english it has many meanings (Teaching profession, lecturer, professor etc etc) so it is important to know the context in whih it is used, however in this case I not sure.
I also understand that 'livre-docente' is a sort of qualification/title above graduate/MA/BA/PHD ie full professor?
I was thinking to use "selection process for Professorship, and later obtained the catagory of Ass. Prof???

Thanks yr input Christina, your comments more or less agree with my further research on this rather ellusive phrase, in so far that it says in the context, he entered the livre docente procedure and came out with the title of asst professor.
I'm not sure... tenure can be translated as mandato (according to Michaelis).
BUT Livre-Docência, (and not Livre-Docente), is only the examination of degrees and titles submitted by PhDs/Doctors of Philosophy to upgrade their position to associate professors at State Universities.
The public Universities in the State of São Paulo also require the 'Livre-Docência' examination to accept associate professors applications for a position as full professor.
Thank u all, excellent input, I have also found that 'tenure'or 'tenureship'seems to be applicable in this context, Ive never come across a phrase that is so vaguely translated in Eng, or has so many meanings (docente) in english, but in the context of 'concurso'I believe it covers, (as Christina pointed out), various levels, from substitute, associate/assistant, through to full professorship? I believe tenure is the key word here?
