This word is perfectly fine for usage in education and is not considered "slang."
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary is one of the most respected English-English dictionaries in the English language, and replaced what used to be the Webster Dictinary since the copyright period of time expired for the use of Webster and absolutely anyone could write a Webster Dictionary. That is when Webster changed its name to Merriam-Webster so it could renew the copyright.
Either "fail" or "flunk" are fine in this context.
