associate professorship thesis

Explanation:
Several years ago I consulted the Brazilian woman who was head of the Portuguese Dept at Georgetown University (dept. now eliminated).

She explained: earning this title, through a competitive examination, makes the successful candidate eligible for appointment on a university's permanent (not contract) teaching staff, usually starting as asst. professor (the closest equivalent). But if job is not available then you just get the title. No U.S. equivalent

John Milton, of USP in Brazil, suggested Senior Lecturer (he said this is widely used in England). He also said that Livre docente is not as high a rank as professor titular.

However, as another expert pointed out, "senior lecturer" in the USA is a term that can be applied to a “celebrity” guest admitted onto the teaching staff, someone who doesn’t have a PhD (such as a former state governor, or renowned journalist.

So Annette's suggestion is the best, in my view.

This question of "livre docencia" comes up quite often.
