Builder's estimate for electrical installation of a borehole pumphouse: "Fornecimento de 28 m de cabo VAV 4x10 mm com *chantes*, desde a parede do quadro do contador até à casinha, incluindo abertura e tapamento de vala".

Could this be a borrowing, form French say? I drew a blank on Google in this context.

Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head with 'shunts'.

I was looking around for VAV cable shunts (without much success actually) and came across this:

So, in reality, 'chante' is actually just a bad interpretation of the English pronunciation.
