Social Sciences - Government / Politics / do Brasil
Portuguese term or phrase: adesão
In Collins it is translated as "adhesion" or "support" (patrocínio). Also in Proz, the translation of "admission" is given in certain circumstances. What would be best here?

Was Venezuela actually admitted into Mercosur (Spanish) or Mercosul (Portuguese) or the economic community of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uguguay, or is it only support?

Explanation:
Venezuela did actually join, so 'entry' (possibly with 'gain' - see link) is the meaning. You may of course find synonyms more suitable.

adhesion/admission

Explanation:
Since less than 2 months they are full members; before that they were associate member for some time.
N.B. the recent update date in Wiki, and that other countries are reffered to as associate members.

-> Admission was my No. 1; Though Mike seemed to hesitate between adhesion and support, that is why I mentioned it as well.

agree  Claudio Szwarcfiter: Admission is best and fits perfectly into the context. Adhesion isn´t used much.

Explanation:
In treaty language, the term is "accession," assuming some sort of formal action took place.

conseguiu obter a adesão de seu país
succeeded in getting his country admitted

Explanation:
I think you need to change the structure, because the noun is awkward.

"Chávez succeeded in getting his country admitted to Mercosur despite attempts by the US to isolate Caracas from the rest of the region"
