Portuguese term or phrase: baias
"Essa avenida terá calçadas de 4,5 m de cada lado e os pontos de ônibus estarão localizados próximos aos edifícios habitacionais, com baias separadas para não atrapalhar o fluxo de veículos. " shelters? stalls? islands?

English translation:turnouts/pullouts (see below)
Explanation:
I would avoid 'bay' because that term also used for the numbered slots in a bus terminal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_turnout
A bus turnout, bus pullout, bus bay, bus lay-by (UK), or off-line bus stop is a special zone on the side of the main roadway (or bus/tram lane) for primarily buses to stop for a designated bus stop in order to pick up and drop off passengers.

bays

Explanation:
No Canadá se diz 'bays' para se referir às "vagas" exatas onde os ônibus param e os passageiros aguardam para embarcar. As bais são numeradas, o que orienta na baldeação.

Example sentence(s):
  • "Northbound passengers shall transfer to the 211 at bay one"

Why on earth did they take away the bus pull ins? Why does it take half an hour to travel from Queensferry to Connah's Quay?

If this is the case, there will be overflow parking across the street at the Rangers Club and along South Shore, as long as you ensure that you do not park in bus pull-ins.

All these people parking there lead to dangerous situations. I've gotten off buses that have to let off in the traffic lane due to people parked in the bus pull ins, and it's just a mess. And then there are the times the buses suddenly stop in front of me...
