Explanation: I would not normally have opened a new answer at this point in the discussion, but after checking with my "expert" and giving up my position that it's slang (see quotes from her e-mail in my discussion entry), I realized that I could improve on the earlier proposals of the literal translation in terms of working it into the context.
I am still very bemused that a soldier could do the deed while marching. Talk about multitasking!

I checked with an accomplished Brazilian author I know, and this is her interpretation:
Lendo esse pequeno trecho, a clara conclusão é a de que o oficial se matou durante um desfile militar (parada mesmo). Veja: "...o suicidio de um oficial em plena parada." A expressão 'em plena' tira qualquer possibilidade de giria. A giria "na parada" significa "na fita", "nesse lance", e não cabe no contexto em questão.
A expressão "na parada" equivale a "no pedaço", "na jogada", muito comuns no Brasil. Ex. Referindo-se a um evento, pergunta-se: "Vai ter mulher no pedaço (na parada, na jogada)?" Serve para definir uma determinada situação. "Tinha gente demais no pedaço!"
Mas não há duvidas de que o texto se refere a parada mesmo. Suponho que o texto quer dizer que na guerra colonial, mesmo numa epoca de maior abertura e liberdade de comportamento, a depressão existiu a ponto de um oficial se matar durante um desfile militar.

Eu nao entendo "parada" como desfile . . Sem dúvida é gíria como . . é o seguinte meu camarada vai rolar uma parada das boas amanha . .
Portanto, "parada" aqui significa "someone committed suicide" while the whole thing was going down . .
I agree with "airmail", but I don't think we've hit on the right equivalent yet. I looked it up in my dictionary of Portuguese slang and it's used in two other contexts that don't fit here. The idea is "in the middle of everything"--but there's a little more. I'm going to contact my experts!

Thanks for this airmailrpl. That would make sense in the context. But i'm not sure slang would be used in this sort of article. It's a relatively "high-brow" political article which was published in a Portuguese newspaper. Would "parada" be used as slang to mean event in this formal context? It certainly makes more sense than the soldier killing himself while parading....which logistically seems odd! Thanks everyone!
It's only mentoined twice in the article. It's an article about homosexuals in the miitary during the colonial war. I'm assuming it means parade or procession perhaps? Here is the other example" E até houve o suicídio de um oficial em plena parada." Thanks.

Explanation: uma parada in slang means a scheme, a plan, a thing.
so it wuold seem that the person in question overdid it (thus exhausting and literally killing himself as a result), or killed himself whilst in the act.
alternatively, but it would help to have the context, what might be meant is that he overdid it despite the general blind eye that was turned to sexual liberty. a certain level might have been tolerated, but not beyond a certain point
