Portuguese term or phrase: conocerse

I'm not sure if this means 'get to know oneself' or 'get acquainted'. The essay is by a young man who was quite self-absorbed until he met up with some immigrants and began to hear stories of their lives. I included the rest of the paragraph, which hints at the metamorphosis to come.

Lo que me quitó el velo de la ignorancia autocomplaciente fue el conocer a la gente. La universidad siempre es un espacio para el arte, el deporte, para conocerse, para compartir y para innovar. Entre muchas otras personas, conocí a un compañero de comunicación que me dijo una palabra que hasta entonces no significaba nada para mí: que él era un refugiado de Colombia. Empecé a leer sobre el tema y a tratar de comprender cómo era la situación en mi país
