Thanks Susanne and todbr. It seems so odd, however, there is some comparison (nowhere near this extract!) between the two different wings of the castle, so maybe that's what it refers to - the other wing of the castle. Thanks for your help.

"banda" can mean simply "side" or "half" (source: Houaiss dictionary). it lacks context, but I guess it could be something like "hidden [when looking] from the other side"

"outra banda" usually refers to a place on the other side of a river. Here, "not know on the other side of the moat" or "outside the castle" might be meant.
