Portuguese to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Idioms / Maxims / Sayings / Possible regionalism | | Portuguese term or phrase: balela | Source: transcription of a folk artist from Alagoas talking about his work. His language is colorful, poetic, and often obscure. I am attempting to separate his own idioletic usage from possible regionalisms. (There are no illustrations available.)
Please note that the artist does not appear to be using the term in its usual sense, i.e.:
Aurélio: “Notícia ou dito sem fundamento. Boato”
Houaiss: “afirmação ou boato infundado ou falso; mentira”
Dicionário de sinônimos (Editora Globo) “boato, mentira, atoarda, balão"
Aqui, a meu ver, parece que ele está usando no sentido de “bagunça”, nos dois casos.
"Lobisomem? Ah, é que nem uma lenda, né? O povo acrescenta muitas coisa, corre um bicho, corre um lobisomem. Mas só que ninguém nunca viu um lobisomem aperfeiçoado, às vez passa um cachorro mais ardiloso, ele faz muita balela e faz a gente aceitar que é outro tipo de apresentaçãoque tá andando".
"A gente pode, mas separar as cordazinha pra pegar a tonalidade do violão das corda, tem que a gente ter vocação já nos dedo, pra saber dividir as corda. Aí eu me atrapalho, eu faço só uma balela. Asker: I wouldn't put "bullshit" in this man's mouth. And it's the dog that's doing the action of "fazer balela," if we keep strictly to the syntax. Which, admittedly, one can't always do with this man's speech.
Asker: I am closing this question without picking an option. I discovered no proof that "balela" has a regional meaning different from the standard dictionary definitions. For the record, I decided this was yet another case of the speaker using language creatively, and I translated the first use of "balela" as follows: "Sometimes a wilier dog goes by…it sets the rumors flying" and the second "So I make a mess of it, just make a racket."

Asker: Thanks, Robert. The problem for me is that the artist is using the term not quite in any of these senses. THe sense is *related* but not quite there. His language is really quite "Guimarães Rosa" and leaves much to the imagination. I'll post my final solutions later.
