The laws of inheritance were first laid down in the Bible. Scripture provides as follows: The firstborn son (bekhor) shall receive a double portion of the inheritance (Deut. 21:17). If a man dies without leaving a son, his property shall be transferred to his daughter. If he has no daughter, his property goes to his brothers. If he has no brothers, to his nearest relative from his own family. On this basis, the rabbis ruled: "This is the order of inheritance: The son precedes the daughter [i.e., if the inheritor leaves both a son and a daughter, only the son inherits], and all the son's offspring [i.e., if he died before the inheritor and left children] precede the daughter. The daughter precedes the brothers [of the inheritor], and the daughter's offspring precede the brothers.
