Explanation:
The meaning is very clear from the dictionary definitions (see Michaelis below) but it is hard to think of a commonly-used word in English with the full meaning. "Office" fits the bill, as there is head office and there are branch offices, all of them centres of administration. "Seat" doesn't seem appropriate!

Don't know Mark but I know it is not headquarters here.

To me its, "from the same parent company, or that is, if from a branch, all from the branch, if from some affiliate, all from the same affiliates".

Hard to know, the context is not clear from this paragraph. I'm just guessing.

Asker: But "mesma sede" applies to both matriz and filial in the source text, so how can it mean headquarters?

My notes indicate this is a British term, but I also noted that I had seen it used once with regard to a Delaware-based company.

Otherwise I might suggest "place of business"

if sede is translated this way (not "principal..."), the difference in rank is taken care of when you translate matriz and filial.
