To answer your question, I think it's better to keep "syllabic." Your author is sayingt that it's the vowel of that syllable -- the syllable's vowel, so to speak. Though I agree that it's not central to the point being made.

Asker: Do you think the word "syllabic" is really necessary? Sure, it would be important if this was a "syllabic consonant" but for a vowel?
