Portuguese term or phrase: bate ate a sombra
Any help on this would be greatly apprciated.

Unfortunately I literally have no context to work from, so I appreciate you won't be able to come up with a single meaning, but I need some ideas as to what it could mean. Grammar and spelling may be questionable!

even beats his own shadow

Explanation:
Hi Alistair,
The expression reminds me of Lucky Luke, shooting faster than his own shadow!
Hope this helps.

even the shadow is cast/even the shade falls

Explanation:
In PT-BR, it is normal to use the verb "bater" when talking about shade or a shadow (sombra could be either of these), in the sense of "falls" or "is cast".

Ex. "a sombra da árvore bate na minha casa" = the shade/shadow of the tree falls on my house.

So it could be a question like: "What´s your yard like?", with the answer "It´s even shady there".
